David A. Gerber

David A. Gerber is Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus and Senior Fellow in History and in Disability Studies at the University of Buffalo (SUNY), where until 2024 he continued to teach an undergraduate seminar on the First Amendment. As a historian of the United States, he has a longtime interest in American immigration law and policy, the experience of European immigrating to the United States, and American ethnic identities, which formed the subject of several of his books. Recently, with Bruce Dierenfield, he brought together his interest in disability and the religion clauses of the First Amendment in Disability and Religious Liberty in Education: The Story Behind Zobrest v. Catalina Foothills School District (2020), a Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2021. Active in consulting for museums and public history projects, he serves on the History Advisory Committee of the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Foundation. dagerber.com
